Thank you for visiting Kurt Kavanaugh Orthodontics, where we happily provide orthodontic care for the entire family. With offices in both Kansas City and Sedalia, MO, keeping up with your family’s routine appointments is easier than ever. We are dedicated to helping you and your loved ones maintain optimal oral health at every age. We not only specialize in adult treatment, but children’s orthodontic treatment as well! We recommend that your child come in for their first visit by the age of seven, as these early examinations allow for timely detection and effective treatment of problems that have the possibility of developing into more serious conditions in the future.

Why Is Early Orthodontic Treatment Important?

During their preliminary examination, Dr. Kurt Kavanaugh will determine if and when your child should begin orthodontic treatment. Jawbone development can vary from child to child, so it is important they get assessed on a personalized basis. In these early examinations, we will be able to spot any abnormalities in the growth patterns of the teeth or jawbone, as well as any other concerns that may cause issues at a later age. The purpose of early treatment is to allow us to guide healthy development of your child’s teeth and jaw and prevent any related emergences of more complex conditions. Rest assured, you will be given only accurate, helpful information that will help your child as their smiles grow and develop.

Specifically, early treatment can:

  • Guide permanent teeth into an ideal position while in early stages of development
  • Support and assess healthy jawbone development
  • Lower the risk of damage to protruding teeth or buck teeth
  • Begin to correct improper bite or misplaced teeth
  • Improve facial symmetry

Early examinations and treatment do not only improve the appearance of your child’s smile, but they are very beneficial for overall health as well. Improper teeth and jaw closure, also known as malocclusions, can negatively affect the way your child chews, smiles and cleans their teeth.

But Does My Child Need Early Treatment?

It will be beneficial to set up a preliminary examination with Dr. Kurt Kavanaugh when your child is around the age of seven so he can assess your child’s specific needs. For your knowledge, there are also behaviors and symptoms to keep an eye out for that will indicate your child may benefit from early treatment. They include:

  • Grinding or clenching of the teeth
  • Biting into the cheeks or roof of mouth
  • Thumb sucking for a prolonged period of time
  • Breathing through mouth only/most of the time
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Early or late loss of teeth

Regardless of the age of your child, please call us if you notice any of the above behaviors. They could be a sign of something good to get checked early.
