Smiling teenage girl with braces and long brown hair, wearing a blue tank top.

At Kurt Kavanaugh Orthodontics, we’re committed to helping our patients get the smiles of their dreams by providing exceptional orthodontic treatment to kids, teens and adults. If you’re wearing braces that are bonded to your teeth, your Kansas City and Sedalia orthodontist told you that it’s very important to steer clear of certain foods and snacks that can damage or break your braces.

Some types of foods can do a great deal of damage your braces so you need to avoid them completely like hard, sticky and chewy foods. Other foods can easily get stuck in your appliances to make a big mess. Some types of foods can lead to tooth decay which means they should be eaten in moderation and only if you’re able to clean your teeth quickly afterward. And to avoid breaking your braces, you should always abstain from nail biting and chewing on pencils, pens or other objects. And by all means, do not use your teeth as tools for undertaking tasks like opening packages or loosening bottle caps.

Examples of Hard Foods to Avoid:

  • Hard taco shells
  • Hard crusted breads, bagels and pizza crust
  • Firm fruits and vegetables like apples, pears and carrots (unless cut into small pieces)
  • Chips
  • Nuts
  • Ice
  • Corn on the cob

Examples of Sticky Foods to Avoid:

  • All gummy candy
  • Taffy
  • Toffee
  • Caramels
  • Licorice
  • Chewing gum (sugar free or regular)
  • Starburst
  • Tootsie Rolls

Sugary Foods to Cut Back On:

  • Cake & cupcakes
  • Cookies
  • Ice cream
  • Pie
  • Candy

Drinks to Enjoy Just Once Per Day:

  • Soda
  • Sweetened tea
  • Gatorade
  • Kool-Aid
  • All sugary beverages

When you’re wearing braces that are bonded to your teeth, we recommend checking your appliances regularly for any loose wires or brackets. If you do find that something has loosened, give our office a call right away so we can set up a repair appointment for you.
